A change of plans

The family and I have broken up, or at least that is the feeling I am left with. I am not exactly clear what happened, a break down in communication and an abrupt decision that it would be best if I move out and as soon as possible. Perhaps it was not intended to be so soon, as I have recently been told that Spanish have a very direct way of speaking, but when the first thing I was asked Sunday morning was how soon I could get my bags ready I started packing. I would have liked to have talked about things a little and I am a little sad that things ended the way they did.

I find in general I am overally negative about things and I want to focus more on the positive of this situation and say that despite this incident I have had a really good week. One of the teachers I work with more than opened the doors to her house to me and I have really enjoyed staying with her and her family. It is such a delight to eat supper without the presence of the t.v. and to have people interested in trying my ´canadian´ cooking. In the end it will all work out for the best and now I have a week off for the ´Semana Santa´ to explore other parts of Spain and then I will start house hunting. As usual the Spanish do things different and have their Easter holiday before Easter.

Hi Katie:

My, my -- what an unpleasant surprise for you. But then again, despite best efforts and best intentions the strangest things happen between people. I have stories .....

The best that can be said about such things is: sh*t happens. And that which does not kill you outright makes you stronger.

Ideally, you would be able to learn what is behind the abrupt decision. Doesn't look possible, though. Too bad.

Good for you, looking for the positive. Hard to do sometimes -- but worthwhile, I think.

We are off to Passover Seder on Monday. This is a REALLY BIG week-long religious event. Looking forward to seeing the family again, especially the kids.

My camera is STILL in the barn being repaired and cleaned (four weeks and counting). I feel deprived of one of my arms (... or eyes). Especially since I have been soaringly inspired by a big photo show at the Vancouver Art Gallery. All revved up and no way to shoot.

Keep writing -- always a treat.

Ken.

Hi Katie ...
Wierd .. you are right, sometimes Spanish (people in Spain) are a little more direct than the average Canadian, and even Latin American, as us, but an invitation to pack your bags, don't leave much room. The interesting question would try to know why, but as we say, "everythng happens for a reason". So we fully agree with you, take the positive spinn on things, and enjoy!
Please keep writing,

Hi Katie,
Diana here.
Wow. That pretty much sucks. Something similar happened while I was in London but, in my case, I was the one who found the house-share situation I was in intolerable and left the Kiwis for... a fellow teacher's house! I hope things work out well in your house hunting. My move was definitely a change for the better. Cheer!
